川上　いえいえ、決してそうとも言えませんよ。

一つ例を申し上げますと、湾岸戦争の時にはインターネットという概念はほとんどありませんでしたが、もし今後戦争が起これば、戦場へ衛星電話とデジタルカメラを持っていきさえすれば、司令部で発表したものと違う“現実”をダイレクトに流すことができるでしょう。

でも、写真一つとっても、素人が写したものと、プロが写したものとではどちらが人を惹きつけると思いますか。当然、プロの写真の方が写りもいいですし、やはりそちらの方に目がいってしまうのではないでしょうか。文章もまた同様でしょう。そういったプロがつくった素材を、“ある一個人がつくったホームページ”としてインターネットに載せたらどうでしょう。

──必ずしも真実が目立つのではなくて、意図された演出の方がずっと目立ってしまうことになる・・・。

川上　そういうことです。実はアメリカでは、こういった人間の心理状況を利用して、意図的に情報操作し世論をつくりだす、誘導していく研究を進めている機関があるんです。
